When gossip becomes obsession

They are not just on TV and in the films any more. They are also on poster advertisements, staring down at you while you drive. They are on the cover of mags calling out to you at the superstore. "Can you think that Angie and Brad split up?" somebody announced to me just this past weekend. The doleful thing was, I knew who they were talking about. When we are inundated with stories and gossip about celebrities on an everyday basis, it's little wonder we begin to refer to them on a first-name basis, as if we all know them. But where do we draw the mark between gossip and obsession? It appears the line is increasingly blurred. Not only do we all know what the stars wear, we all know what they eat and where, and, maybe most annoying, their private lives are all over the media. The paparazzi dog stars at each turn, and when stars ultimately retaliate, it's all over the news about how "crazy" they are.

The demand is so high for the newest celebrity buzz that photographers are prepared to do whatever is needed, including putting folk in danger of harm or worse, simply so they can get a picture. Don't misunderstand me : I suspect it's fine to need to be like your fave celebrity. By all means, if it makes you a more rounded person, go for it. I admit I possess a total girl-crush on Drew Barrymore.

She has great fashion sense, she is personable and she uses her status to support deserving causes like animal welfare, fighting helps and misery reduction. But because I see all this does not imply I know her.

Liking a celeb should not cross the line. It isn't required to discover each piece of dust there is to know, so put down yourNational Enquirerand pick up anInStyleinstead.
