Lopez commenced as a dancer on In Living Color, became an actress, then a megastar, then a pop star, then a brand, then a tabloid fixture, first as 1/2 Dilopez and then Bennifer, then a punchline and now as kind of a has-been. The general public overdosed on Lopez sometime round the 2003 release of Gigli so she is in the ideal position to reinvent herself as an actress rather than a global company the way her previous beau Ben Affleck washed away the filth of tabloid infamy and established himself as a promising filmmaker with Gone Baby Gone and a talented character actor with unusual supporting roles in Hollywoodland and Extract. Affleck is doing the best work of his often checkered and spotty career ; Lopez was on Sat. Night Live yesterday evening pimping a terrible-looking comedy pairing her with mega-star Alex O Laughlin and what seems to be one more slick, unmemorable pop album. Do not call it a comeback cause it likely isnt one. Lopezs opening speech riffed on the gulf between the J Lo of 2k and the cut-rate recession version by having Kenan Thompson appear in the crowd as a downsized previous member of her entourage who fell on hard times since his one talent in life holding a glass of juice for a superstardoes not prove terribly helpful outside life within the hermetic sector of an entourage. Hey, that We Are The World remake sure is purposeless, huh? Sat. Night Live artfully satirised the pointlessness of this recent twist on a hoary old chestnut by having the We Are The World gang sing about the pointlessness of remaking a song that was pretty horrible in the 1st place. Project and then also because I adore the music of the band Smash Mouth so I used to be a tiny biased but I liked the idea of a song that was so omnipresent ( during J.Los nadir, in reality ) at one time reappearing in such a strange context and the concept of Smash Mouth as spellbinding musical elves. The sketch got all the details rightthe soul patches, somebody mistaking Smash Mouth for 3rd Eye Blind, the young girl using All Star on her football videoand had a pleasant ending where Lopez, as the mummy, reminds the young girl of all the positive associations she has with All Star.

Episodes like yesterday evening occasionally make me feel a bit like reviewing Sat. Night Live on a regular basis is a purposeless enterprise ( virtually as purposeless as that "We Are The World" remake and living in New Jersey, am I right people? ) at that point in the season, the show is on auto.
