Smith urges player responsibility.

Walter Smith claims soccer players have a responsibility to watch unwritten rules of off-field behaviour to avoid undesired news. The Rangers manager saw his goalkeeper, Allan McGregor, Celebrity Gossip become a regular feature of non-sport stories recently. Smith accepts McGregor's behavior may not differ seriously from that of prior generations and therefore the public hunger for celebrity gossip and the changing media agenda make folks in his position a prime target. Footballers have got to respond to that, declared the Rangers chief. It's a facet of their lives they need to look after and that could be a responsibility they have got to take.

The team Smith led on to 9 league titles in a row in the 1990s was Celebrity Gossip known to enjoy an evening out but rarely attracted the sort of off-field attention afforded to McGregor and his contemporaries. There isn't any use whinging about it, he went on. They all know the accepted rules, ignore the written ones or the disciplinary ones they have from inside the club. The ones are ones they should follow also. All of them know what they deserve to be doing and what they should not be doing. It's up to them to try and work out which is which. Britain executive Fabio Capello stated this week that he felt exaggerated player salary were partly at fault for the quantity of non-football announcements generated by folks like John Terry and Ashley Cole. They are doing what other kids their age do, he recommended. The cash might permit them to do it more frequently, but they have got a profile they must be terribly careful of and, if they are not, they finish up in front of Television cameras and that kind of stuff.
