Gossip pages taking over sports

Stories of Brinkley's trip surfaced this week as an element of a divorce trial in NY that was a tabloid dream. Among the tales of lust, moulah and motherhood was a retort by her soon-to-be-ex that she should have been an actress rather than a model after her performance in court. About the single thing missing was an appearance by Madonna, but seemingly this was one divorce she did not have to reject any participation with.

That isn't the case when it comes to the Rodriguez family, whose relationship had always provided strap line material for the Big Apple tabloids. Put a pop star and a Yankee celebrity together, and you can keep printing papers till you run out of newsprint. Our interest in everything celebrity reputedly knows no bounds, though that should not come as any surprise to any one who pays attention to the daily mating dance between the paparazzi and Britney Spears or watches the has-beens that masquerade as celebs on shows like Dancing With The Stars. We will not get enough of Paris Hilton, can't believe David Archuleta sings like he does, and can't stop talking about how Nicole Kidman basically named her new baby Sun. Rose. We are so celebrity obsessed that more Yanks can most likely better tell you how much Ed McMahon is in balance on his Beverly Hills estate than they can debate the monthly trade hole with China. My uncultivated estimate is that it's neither, and not simply because I have never met a ballplayer who had several deep thoughts. He's doing just fine at the plate, though he is not hitting home runs at almost the same pace he probably did last season. Yankee chief Joe Girardi expounded the other day he did not believe the issues in A-Rod's private life would spill over to the field, and he's possibly right. Recall, this is the same player who hit 54 home runs last year notwithstanding tabloid footage showing him with a lady reported to be a stripper at a Toronto hostel. It isn't even all that intriguing unless, naturally, you add Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, a new baby, and footage that show C-Rod is terribly significant about physical fitness to the mix. And I suspect it beats troubling about gas at $4.40 a gallon or the fact the Yankees are stuck in 3rd place, eight half games out with the season more than half over. Yankee fans should be interested in that, too, because it's their ticket moulah which will fund both Rods for several years.
